A WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS THAT’S ‘ALL HEART’ An hour with the owner of Heart and Soul Spa, By Joya Dass

With my women’s movement, I spend alot of time supporting South Asian female owned small businesses, but not writing at length about it. Yesterday, I got to spend an hour with Julie Shah, the owner of Heart and Soul Spa which caters to female clients only. Like many other women of South Asian origin that I meet, Julie led a successful life in corporate America before another calling pulled her in another direction. She spent years working in the pharmaceutical industry. Upon getting her advanced business degree, she realized a yen for the skincare business.A handful of years later, Heart and Soul Spa is her newest venture, nestled in Closter, New Jersey, where we are hosting the January Manifest Party High Tea on the 23rd of this month. She came to my home to give me her customized facial. We turned my sectional couch into a table for her to work her magic on me. We used my dining room table as a sort of lab, so she could whip up a range of potions to address a) the martini I had the night before b) the aging as I turned 43 last month. c) all the time I spend worshipping the sun come summer time. It was a blissful hour of massage, accupressure, and a little lesson in how different parts of our face correspond to different parts of our body. How does the song go? “The toe bone’s connected to the foot bone, / The foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone, / The ankle bone’s connected to the…”The come-home service is part of the array of services she offers. Julie says she operates the business with alot of heart “What can I do for you?” She says, when a patron calls to tell her that she didn’t have a row with her teenage daughter that day because of Julie’s calming treatments, she deems it a win. “I lost my dad when I was 13 and my mom when I was 34. My daughter and my mom helped me find and start my spa-my true passion — “Heart” is my daughter and “Soul” is my mom. The mission of my business is to make women feel good about themselves, by taking away their stress and making them feel relaxed.”She has bigger goals. She’s attending the Manifest party on January 23rd and wishes by 2018, to provide more of her spa services to schools in the U. S. and in India. “I firmly believe when girls/women are confident from the inside, their outlook on life and decision making skills are effective and superior on the outside. With my services, I am quietly empowering women to believe in themselves, follow their dreams, and be kind and generous to one another. We are all worthy of self love. This self love affords us the capacity to love other human beings.”When I wrote my gratitude list yesterday, I was just so grateful for the gift of this facial yesterday. Thank you Julie! Identity Magazine is all about guiding women to discover their powers of Self-Acceptance, Appreciation, and Personal Achievement. We ask that every contributor and expert answer  the Identity 5 questions in keeping with our theme. Their answers can be random and in the moment or they can be aligned with the current article they have written. In that way, and as a team, we hope to encourage and motivate each other, thus inspiring you to Get All A’s.

1. What have you accepted within your life, physically and/or mentally? Additionally, what are you still working on accepting?

I have accepted that life is short and unpredictable.  It is important to cherish every breath we take and live in the moment.  I had a wonderful childhood in India.  However, in my early teenage years my dad passed away, and we came to the United States to follow our American Dream and we built a home here. My mom was my rock, my mentor, and my best friend, all in one, and suddenly she passed away in 2008; and I hit my rock bottom.  However, a year later in 2009, I was blessed with a baby girl, who gave me new purpose and meaning to my life.  I am learning to accept that losing your loved ones will leave a void for a very long time.  The best way to fill the void is to follow in their footsteps and keep their legacy alive.

2. What have you learned to appreciate about yourself and/or within your life, physically and mentally? On the other hand OR in contrast, are there elements of who you are that you’re still working on appreciating?

I have learnt that I am grittier than I care to admit.  Also, my most joyful moment is when I see a smile on the face of someone I was able to help.My mom found joy and fulfillment in helping others regardless of her own circumstances.  I hit rock bottom when I lost my mom.  To keep her legacy alive I decided to follow in her footsteps of giving and helping others.  So, from the “Heart” of my daughter and “Soul” of my mom, Heart & Soul Spa was born and Heart & Soul mission was created. Heart & Soul mission is to allow you to love your skin, grow your confidence and reach your true meaning and purpose in life.  This is my way of giving back to you.  I am learning to appreciate my journey over time to reach my own purpose in life.  Having my business driven by purpose is the first step to that journey.

3. What is one of your most rewarding achievements in life? Tell us not only what makes YOU most proud but also share the goals and dreams that you still have.

My most rewarding achievement is to be able to get up when I was knocked down after my mom’s death and start my Heart & Soul Spa.  With my spa, I started formulating my own skin care products and started selling them.  My Indian heritage encouraged me to formulate my skin care product line made with organic, natural, plant-based, ingredients; and they are vegan, gluten free, non-GMO; free of: chemical fillers, parabens, alcohol, and synthetic additives/colors/dyes/fragrances.  With my Heart & Soul products and services, I am able to follow in my mom’s footstep and help others love their skin, grow their confidence and achieve their true meaning and purpose in life.  As I am the manufacturer and distributer of my skin care products, I am proud to sell them, directly to you, at a reasonable cost.  Since my daughter and my mom are the foundation of Heart & Soul, and by being a part of Heart & Soul community, you are being a part of something bigger, helping me see and hire more women, by supporting and mentoring them to live their life with more confidence.  My goal and dream is to see my high quality Heart & Soul products becoming an essential part of daily skincare regimen in every household.

4. Of course, we all have imperfections, or so we think. In truth, we are all perfectly imperfect. What are your not-so-perfect ways? Likewise, what imperfections and quirks create who you are—your Identity?

My attention to details and my passion for perfection are important elements of my identity.

5. “I Love My…” is an outlet for you to appreciate and express all the positive traits that make you…well…YOU! In fact, sharing what you love about yourself will make you smile, feel empowered, and uplift your spirit and soul. (We assure you!) Therefore, Identity challenges you to complete the phrase “I Love My…?”

I love myself and what I am able to offer to others.  In addition, I believe that we all are born with a gift, and my gift is to start my Heart & Soul Spa, invent my own skin care formulas, and to allow you to love your skin and grow your confidence.
